Compulsory insurance

In order to practise, it is a requirement that a solicitor‘s firm must hold professional indemnity insurance with at least 2m of cover. In some cases, the minimum level of cover will be higher.

What‘s more, the terms on which the solicitor‘s firm trades with clients cannot try to limit its liability to anything less than this minimum level of cover.

There are similar rules that require a compulsory minimum level of professional indemnity insurance for barristers. However, other providers of legal services may not be so well covered by insurance. For example, will writing services are presently largely unregulated.
